About Iron County Forest

Iron County Forest, located in northern Wisconsin, covers a large expanse of forested land within Iron County. The forest is characterized by a mix of northern hardwoods—such as maple, birch, and aspen—and conifer species including pine and spruce. The terrain is gently rolling with numerous small lakes and wetlands scattered throughout, supporting diverse wildlife including white-tailed deer, black bears, and a variety of bird species. Historically, the area was influenced by logging in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, with much of the land later recovering and now managed by the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources. Recreation opportunities include hiking on remote trails, horseback riding, ATV riding on designated routes, snowmobiling in winter, and fishing in the many lakes and streams. The forest's relatively undeveloped nature appeals to visitors seeking solitude, wildlife viewing, and a rustic outdoor experience. While there are few developed facilities, Iron County Forest is well known locally for its wildlife habitat management and public access for hunting and trapping seasons. The forest also provides important ecosystem services, such as water filtration through its wetlands and habitat preservation for native species. Nearby small towns provide access points and basic amenities for visitors. Its broad landscape lends itself to multi-day backcountry excursions for experienced hikers and outdoor enthusiasts.
